Description
Why is EMU JERKY such a remarkable AUSTRALIAN dog treat?
That is besides being a clean Australian grown source of protein and oils, and in bite-sized chunks suitable for ALL dogs. Pieces typically vary from a few cm square to strips about 2-3 cm wide by 5 cm to 10 cm long. The thickness is a very manageable 3 to 8 mm. They are suitable to eat, straight from the pack.
THE EMU JERKY HIGHLIGHTS
- 100% Natural & SINGLE INGEDIENT
- HYPO-ALLERGENIC
- No Artificial Colours, Additives or ANYTHING added.
- This naturally, means Preservative Free
- HIGH levels of Essential Amino Acids & High quality OMEGA 3
- bioavailable protein, allows dogs to build and maintain muscle
- High amounts of minerals and vitamins
This DARK MEAT, is a sustainable resource, that is available in small bite sized pieces for ANY sized dog.
Yes it is ” air dried in the driers HACCP, Safe Food & FDA accredited facility “ but EMU is a genuine highly valuable meat for dogs.
It is so unique that we present the typical analysis upfront here:
Typical Nutrition
- Crude Protein = 86%
- Fat = 10%
- Crude Fibre = 2.2%
- Moisture = approx. 10%
- Ash = 6%
- Metabolisable Energy (Atwater) – 379.1 kcal/100g
Out of this there are MANY special mentions for your dog.
Firstly, that level of Protein is EXCEPTIONAL.
As you can see, while beef, chicken and lamb are common farmed meats used in dog food in Australia, the protein Level of EMU rivals that of kangaroos. Kangaroo dog treats are also organic and highly prized nutritioin. But one of the main differences is that Kangaroos are culled in the wild (under Govt quota), while Emu’s are typically farmed in Australia and around the world.
Sustainability wise, buying clean Australian EMU meat (the place they originated, makes the most sense for most owners).
The reason that the Emu dog treats protein level is higher than that of the reference (used for comparison with other meats), is different calculation processes. But as you can see, its still one of the peak protein dense foods out there for your dog.
And not only that EMU meat has a massive amount of high quality Fats and vitamins and minerals that many farmed animals don’t. We will discuss the ACTUAL values below.
HYPO-ALLERGENIC EMU JERKY !
Like many novel proteins (those your dog rarely or never eats) – EMU meat is exceptionally good at reducing the chance of allergies from food.
Not only that, the exception Amount of Omega 3 (from animal source) – also acts as a great anti-inflammatory that will keep things like environmental contact allergies in check.
LOWER ENERGY values
While Emu meat can have trimmed fat around the edges of the small pieces, when compared to beef and chicken, its total ENERGY value tends to be considerably lower then beef or chicken.
Energy (kJ/100g) : EMU = 439 , Beef = 517 , Chicken -= 508
THE VERY GOOD EMU OIL
You might have looked at an old bottle of ‘Emu Oil’ and wondered how the original manufacturers were able to sustain selling so much through the decades. The claim to fame for the current batch of sellers is that “EMU OIL has been used for thousands of years for its anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating powers.” They also say that “it is the closest oil to the one found in the human skin.”
The manufacturers of this human use product also say that it can assist in reducing “eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis” and can even heal burns (reduces scarring), assists arthritis (anti-inflammatory) and relieves sore muscles. But to understand why, its worth looking at the Appendix below.
The secret to its anti-inflammatory properties is the amount of Omega 3 Essential oil.
You will see from the aafco dog nutrition guide (used by all dog food makers) that they only give a total minimum fat, and Omega 6 and Omega 3 minimum amounts, plus the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3.
You will also see in the reference that the emu report breaks the oils down into SFA (short chain fatty acids) , MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids ) and PUFA polyunsaturated fatty acids.
- The reason why aafco talk specifically about Omega 3 and 6 is that they are “Essential Fatty Acids. And these are the PUFA that Dogs cannot make they require them in food because
- Omega-6 (like linoleic acid) – essential for skin, coat, immune function.
- Omega-3 (like EPA and DHA) – supports joints, heart, brain, and reduces inflammation.
‘Adequate’ PUFA intake helps reduce dry, flaky skin and supports a shiny coat.
- While Omega 6 is relatively easy to provide in its best form in dog food. Omega 3 known for its Immunity & Anti-inflammatory Effects is much harder.
- Manufacturers will provide preservatives and Add vitamin E as a natural preservative to reduce oils going rancid.
Omega-3s (from fish oil or ‘plant matter’) are known to reduce inflammation and support immune health — helpful for dogs with allergies or joint issues. BUT the only way that you will get the proper ratio of Omega 6 to 3 (best around 7) is to use Omega 3 from an animal source.- For instance, Fish oil, kangaroo fats, and Emu fats are – high in EPA & DHA (good for inflammation). Whereas Flaxseed (the cheap alternative used in most dog food) is in the form “ALA” which dogs convert inefficiently to EPA and DHA.
- It is true that ‘Natural meat sources (like kangaroo or emu) often have better omega-3 profiles than grain-fed meats.
But putting some numbers to this really drives home the point about how exceptional EMU MEAT is.
The table in the appendix shows that there are four chemical variations of Omega 3 (n 3) and three types of Omega 6 in the total PUFA mix of emu oil. And its n6 to n3 ratio is right in the sweet spot of 6.97.
But more than that, comparing EMU to Beef and Chicken we see this:
TOTAL PUFA Energy (kJ/100g) EMU = 24.08 , Beef = 4.77 , Chicken = 19.1
OMEGA 3 (n3 PUFA) : EMU = 3.07 , BEEF = 0.58 , Chicken = 2.3
So not only is EMU lower total energy than beef or chicken, but the amount of PUFA and OMEGA 3 (in the correct EPA AND DHA form) is also the largest.
Not only is it very unlikely to cause an allergy, but the amount of Omega 3 is likely to soothe or reduce any allergies from other sources (such as grass contact etc).
EMU JERKY VITAMINS AND MINERALS
A more complete list in typical farmed EMU meat is shown in the appendix below.
EMU has one of the highest and most complete range of VITAMIN B. Very useful for your dog’s energy and many internal dog body processes.
Emu Jerky is famous for its great levels of Minerals. In particular: magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and even Selenium.
Emu meat is also said to have good levels of Vitamin A, C, D, E, F and K2 which has anti-inflammatory effects – however more research needs to be done by labs to confirm actual values.
