Cannabics Australian Biscuit High in Hemp Seed Oil

This functional biscuit (actually contains ingredients that promote specific health benefits to dogs is promoted by Blackdog as having “ THE SUPERFOOD HEMP SEED OIL AND PROTEIN”

You will see from the ingredients list of CANNABICS biscuits, that Hemp seed oil and hemp seed protein are listed as the second and third largest ingredients. So lets explore what that means and how Hemp differs from the common cannabis plant.

Hemp seed oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the hemp plant.  A big difference between hemp plants and legally controlled cannabis, is that while they come from the same plant family “Cannabis sativa L”, the hemp variety legally only includes up to 0.3% THC (the psychoactive compound), versus Cannabis’ THC that can be up to 5-25%. There are other cannabinoids included in both hemp and cannabis, but CBD and THC are the two main active ingredients studied.

Hemp seed oil, in these biscuits is an omega-3 rich oil used in cooking that typically does not contain cannabinoids. 

So why is this hemp seed oil biscuit so useful for your dog?

Mainly because it has HIGH amounts of three polyunsaturated fatty acids: linoleic acid (Omega 6), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA – Omega 3), and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA also Omega 6).

While I mostly promote Omega 3 from animal sources, the good thing about the Omega oils in this hemp seed oil is that the ratio of omega-6 (linoleic acid) to omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids in Hemp seed oil is 3:1.

Dog food is often voluntarily given a ratio of 7:1 or higher, which for dogs with skin sensitivities is far too high to gain the benefit of the anti-inflammatory properties of Omega 3. And so Hemp seed oils Omega ratio (higher in Omega 3) goes someway to address this concern.

Note, Blackdog’s site state that these biscuits “contain SMALL AMOUNTS OF CBD” but as said, since Hemp seed oil typically doesn’t contain CBD, the amounts in this treat should be treated as trace levels potentially from the hemp seed protein or stalk.
