Why we added three dog treat chewing power categories for you
We get enough email requests on on information about what small, medium, old, big powerful dogs etc NEED for their chewing, that most people by-pass the question about what are the nutrition requirements of your dog all together. But briefly first, we will address dog age and size and suitability or chew-ability of treats.
What’s dog age or size got to do with it
Its not a second hand emotion, to paraphrase Tina Turner.
In dog food, the industry typically provide small pellets for small dogs, and slightly larger pellets for larger dogs, mostly to ensure that the dogs can wolf down the maximum amount of food in the shortest time, without choking.
But for most people buying dog treats, they want the longest chewing treat for their dog, that their dog can manage.
This is why we have added the following specialist categories to our website: SMALL, MEDIUM and LONG CHEWING !
SMALL SOFT TREATS – for very young, old or infirmed dogs, or dogs with no teeth or very soft jaws.
MEDIUM CHEWING TREATS – these suit most dogs and involve some chewing, can clean teeth and exercise the jaw.
LONG CHEWING TREATS – For the big powerful chewing dogs. This includes most of the bones, but also things like cow hooves and beef tendons. Things that will mostly occupy the hardest chewers.
Why they include ANY meat in dog food
If your dog has 30% meat at the most (most commercial dog food), you should understand that the only reason that meat is in there, (why the companies are forced to use meat at all), is that affco judged the bare minimum essential amino acids that will keep a dog functioning mostly normal.
100% vegetables on their own can’t reach the minimum standards, so some meat or meat by-product has to be thrown in. And since they have to, they then show a big juicy steak on the packaging that is nothing like the deboned meat scarps that are really in there.
You might also not know that because the vegetable matter is not bio-available to a dog like meat is. The reason for that is because domestic dogs are mostly carnivore. Even though on paper the mostly vegetable concoctions of most commercial dog food meet the low affco protein levels, the vegetable proteins are NOT fully utilised by a dog, like meat is. This leads to dogs being protein deficient, which can lead to many illnesses, particularly as they age, or are pregnant or have an existing illness.
AND that is why feeding 100% meat treats is so ideal to your dog! Our Healthy Meat-based dog treats add back in the protein your dog needs, in the most bioavailable way, so your dog doesn’t need to become obese, just trying to get sufficient nutrition.
Also because some dog food lists ingredients (the meat) based on the wet meat weight, and dry grain weight, the meat might not be the first or second ingredient. There is much less meat than owners might be led to believe. Then there is ingredient splitting to make it look like you are getting more meat than you really are. The many various deceptions are not a coincidence.
THE only way to know how much quality meat your dog is getting is feeding them dried meat dog treats. Not only will you see that its whole (has natural integrity) but by being dry you are getting more than double the wet raw meat equivalent per gram.
THAT is how you really get what you paid for and you are not just giving a distraction, you are boosting health, as evolution and nature intended.
