Organic Dog Treats Australia - Get what you need and pay for !

roo-jerky-organic-dog-treatsOrganic dog treats and dog food are on the rise, but its worthwhile knowing what organic really means and what you are getting for your money and your dog.

BTW upfront, you should know that our 100% meat based dog treat range of Kangaroo and Fish are inherently ORGANIC dog treats.  While some dog food and dog treats that are even certified as organic might not be.

Firstly the definition by the bbcgoodfood site: "Organic food is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation."

So the two main concepts here that you need to know are about 1 - how food is produced as organic and  2. That some people claim that food or treats can't be organic unless they are certified by some organisation.

Organic dog treats - what does this really mean?

If you buy organic certified dog treats, you are expecting a more pure treat, and also paying the organic organisation in Australia for the pleasure of that certification.

And if you are buying an organic dog treat product with any grain in it, it is probably much harder to genuinely prove that every batch is 100% tested for any man-made pesticide or otherwise that might have made it into the growth chain.  If you buy meat, of course any cattle eating grain or vegetable matter must be eating organic crops then not given any of the hormones or 'non organic' things that all other livestock are given to ensure their health.  These things can be hard to guarantee. Let alone the testing quality or minute amounts you might be testing for across a broad spectrum of contamination chemicals.

That is why if you buy a dog treat that is from a 100% wild animal that you have just as much chance, in fact a higher likelihood, of it being truly organic than any organic certified farmed animal.

Because of human's reach of polluting the environment and even water and wind currents carrying those man-made chemicals far and wide, not even in the deepest parts of the ocean far away from land, can a fish be considered 100% organic. However the very nature of WILD meaning away from human intevention - this should mean that it has the highest chance of being 100% organically NATURALLY compared to any farmed animal.  Or if any "man-made" substance is in the meat, that it is in minute amounts.

What does Organic mean in the Human food world?

In the human food chain, certification is taken very seriously, but only in so much that the food can be tested to prove that has been kept 'pure'.  Even if a company uses all of its powers and procedures to maintain the 'purity' of their produce, it is exceedingly difficult for any company to ensure that their crops or livestock are not 'tainted' with those inputs listed above. For instance How far away does an outdoor organic crop need to be from regular crops to ensure that wind or bees do not blow 'contaminants onto their crop?

And if a crop cannot be really ensured to be organic, how likely is it that livestock feed organic food can truly be organic?  And is testing on every harvest of a crop that rigorous that it can pick up an inorganic pesticide or man-made fertilizer?  A rational mind would say no.

sardine-organic-dog-treatsSo why do we cherish organic products and pay a premium for them?  Well the premium price is to do with the extra labour, testing and loss of crop incurred by using often old age farming methods. Another added cost is the cost of earning/ buying  that organic certificaton logo and the overheads of the organic organisation that certifies a food as organic.

But the reason why people want organic in the first place is the often well deserved belief that by removing all of the additives and man-made inputs, the product will be much healthier and less likely to trigger allergic reactions. For a particularly sensitive human or dog, this can be quite true.

CONCLUSION

Do I think that organic dog treats are worth it? Yes.

I also think that a meat/ offal and bone diet preferably raw, is the most important thing in a dog's diet. Failing that, meat based dog treats provide a powerful healthy supplement to our meat starved dogs.  The fact that you can see the grain in our WHOLE 100% meat farmed or wild dog treat range means that the meat is likely to be of a higher quality than any meat you find blended in a can or highly processed into grain pellets.

Organic should always provide a cleaner food product and flavour, but in the dog world they are driven by scent and then texture, so again meat is more important than if a product is organic or not. If you can afford all organic food for yourself, and for your dog, then that is fine.

If your budget doesn't stretch to organic dog treats for your dog, but you really desire organic for your dog, then our Kangaroo and Fish dog treats  (all from the wild) offer you an exceptional value dog treat opportunity that is naturally organic.  They are NOT certified as "organic" because they naturally are, and we don't want to pay another organisation for what we already know, then pass the extra costs onto our customers.  This gives you the nexus of quality and low price organic products, as unprocessed as possible, as pure as possible.
